Along with our i-Connect personal tutoring system and PSHEE (Personal Social Health and Economic Education) programme our Academy has a philosophy of offering as wide a range of opportunities as possible to enable our students to develop as well-rounded individuals. We place a major emphasis on both competitive and non-competitive sport plus a wide variety of other recreational and cultural activities.

Sports

After school we offer a whole host of activities including: rugby, hockey, fitness, badminton, trampoline, table tennis, climbing, rowing, netball, basketball, cricket, gymnastics, tennis, rounders, athletics, and mountain biking.

Our competitive sports teams and individuals have achieved enormous success at local, county, regional and national level. Our Under18 Boys Hockey team was the only state school to reach the 2013 and 2014 National Finals.

Arts

We encourage all of our students to participate in a wide range of artistic clubs and events both in the Academy and externally. Students with a talent for music, drama and dance can ‘tread the boards’ in an Academy production by the Arts College, or be part of the school concert band or choir. Recent notable awards have included one of our students taking the top prize for the Oundle Singer of the Year and another the Peterborough prize for the Art ‘A’ level, awarded through the City Gallery.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Those students with a love of adventure can experience the Duke of Edinburgh Award at Bronze, Silver and Gold level, completing expeditions in the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales and Snowdonia National Park.

Combined Cadet Force (CCF)

The Combined Cadet Force at the Thomas Deacon Academy is a Ministry of Defence sponsored youth organisation which aims to provide opportunities for young people to develop leadership, responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness and endurance, through training, discipline and adventure. Participation can lead to nationally recognised qualifications such as the BTEC Diploma in Public Services and the Institute of Leadership and Management Level 2 Award in leadership and team skills, both of which instil valuable skills for the Cadets to take on into university and their future careers. Our Academy CCF is held in high regard with ten of our cadets being invited to attend the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst for the Sovereign’s Parade in December 2013 as ushers and programme distributors. This was the first time any academy had been invited to attend and a tremendous honour for our cadets to officiate at this prestigious event.
